パレスチナ評議会(Palestine Legislative Council、国会、全132議席)選挙はイスラム原理主義組織ハマス(Hamas,Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya ;Islamic Resistance Movement)が76議席を獲得して与党ファタハ(Fatah)に圧勝した。
この結果を受けて、ニューヨークタイムズは27日付け社説で『中東で大きな後退(In the Mideast, a Giant Step Back )』と題し、

「ハマスがパレスチナ人の生活環境改善のために、武装解除を行い、真のパレスチナ国家樹立のための交渉を行うことを信じられたらどんなに良いか」

It would be nice to believe that Hamas, now that it is assuming the reins of power and the burden of actually having to govern, will renounce its call for the destruction of a sovereign state, disarm its private army, get into the business of making life better for Palestinians and try to negotiate the creation of a real Palestinian state.

としつつも、ブッシュ大統領のイスラエルの殲滅を目指す政党とは交渉の余地はないとする発言を紹介している。

"A political party that articulates the destruction of Israel as part of its platform is a party with which we will not deal."

世界中に懸念の声があるが、26日付けMiddle East Onlineは、
パレスチナ自治区を拠点とするハマス「国内組」のイスマイル・ハニヤ氏(Ismail Haniya)による米国政府への選挙結果の尊重を求める発言を掲載している。その中で、他勢力との協調姿勢を打ち出していることも注目に値するだろう。

Hamas called for the US to respect the result of the elections and "the will of the Palestinian people".
"I call on the American administration to respect ... the will of the Palestinian people and the result of the ballot," chief Hamas candidate Ismail Haniya said.
"Hamas is not going to work alone, but with the other groups who represent the Palestinian people," he said.

そして、双方の意思は、イスマイル・ハニヤ氏(Ismail Haniya)とパレスチナ自治政府のアッバス議長(Mahmoud Abbas)が27日に「政治的パートナーシップ(political partnership)」について数日以内に協議することで合意したということに現れている(28日付け Aljazeer.Net)。

A senior member of Hamas says he will meet Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, in the coming days to discuss forming a "political partnership".

この記事によると、ハマスの現在の最高指導者はシリアのダマスカスにいる「国外組」のハレド・メシャル政治局委員長(Khaled Mashaal)。彼は、創始者ヤシン師(Sheik Ahmed Yassin)が2004年3月にイスラエル軍によって暗殺され、続いて後継者のランティシ氏(Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi)も暗殺された後に集団指導体制のトップとなっている。
その他の重要人物として創始者ヤシン師(Sheik Ahmed Yassin)の医師でもあったガザ地区政治指導部責任者のマハムード・アッ・ザハール氏(Mahmoud Zahar)、西岸指導者ハッサン・
ユーセフ(Sheik Hassan Yousef)氏を挙げている。また、軍事部門を統括しているムハマンド・デニフ(Mohammed Deif)氏からも目を離すことが出来ない。
