武蔵国秩父郡岩田[埼玉県秩父郡長瀞町岩田]を発祥の地とする丹党岩田氏が知られる.白鳥七郎二郎基政の子の岩田六郎政光と岩田七郎政広が岩田を称したことが始まりという.岩田六郎政光は白鳥神社付近に館を構えていたと考えられている.戦国時代には,藤田氏の家老となり,藤田家臣団が北条家に吸収されると北条氏直属の家臣となり天神山城を預かったとされる.
