武蔵国大里郡熊谷郷[埼玉県熊谷市]を発祥の地とする.平維方の子の盛方は北面の武士であったが平忠盛への襲撃を企て誅殺.その子の直貞が乳母によって武蔵国へと逃れ小沢宗実によって育てられ,後に源義家に従い熊谷氏の祖となった.
