清和源氏義光流武田氏族.山梨県南巨摩郡身延町下山を発祥の地とする.武田一族の秋山光朝[-1185]の子の光重を祖とする.秋山光重は建仁年間[1201-04に下山を本拠としたという.下山館の地は,戦国時代には穴山氏の拠点となった.
家紋は丸に松皮菱など.
