橘氏族.新潟県加茂市を発祥の地とする.新潟では「おやなぎ」と読む.新潟県加茂市宮寄上の嶽山寺の碑によれば伊勢国から越後国に来住した橘重保が小柳を称したことが起源という.家紋は丸に木瓜など.
