村上源氏北畠氏族.三重県松坂市星合町里中を発祥の地とする.北畠政郷[-1508]の三男である親泰[頼房]が永正年間[1504-20]に伊勢国星合に拠って星合を称したことが始まりとされる.しかし,親泰[頼房]は『公卿補任』に記載されている年齢から永正7[1510]年の生まれとなる.これは父とされる北畠政郷の死から月日が経ちすぎる.このため,北畠政郷[-1508]の子の材親[1468-1518]の子ではないかとも考えられている.そして,2代目の星合具種も北畠具方の子であると考えられている.
家紋は五瓜に十六葉菊など.
