菅原氏族.京都市南西の西山丘陵から桂川右岸[山城国相楽郡西岡郷]を発祥の地とする.
御庄・徳大寺・上桂・下桂・革嶋[河嶋]・下津林・寺戸・牛ヶ瀬・上久世・下久世・大藪・築山で西岡十一ヵ郷を構成していた.
足利尊氏が直轄軍として西岡衆を組織したことで知られる.西岡衆は,応仁の乱の後,細川政元の被官化を嫌って,鶏冠井雅盛・物集女光重・神足友善・野田泰忠ららが乙訓惣国一揆を組織.
家紋は三つ割り梅鉢など.
