藤原北家長家流那須氏族.那須資藤[-1355]の子・資国が下野国那須郡金丸[栃木県大田原市北金丸・南金丸]を本拠地として金丸を称したことが起源.
応永年間[1394-1428],金丸資国は根小屋館,ついで片田に金丸要害城を築城し居城とした.金丸家は上那須家に仕えていたが,上那須家が内紛等により没落すると,大関家に仕えた.
