土佐国香美郡谷相[高知県香美市香北町谷相]を発祥の地とする一族.長宗我部元親の頃,朝廷の北面の武士だった勘解由兵衛が,土佐国の谷相村に下向した.長宗我部元親は勘解由兵衛を鎧一領と80貫をもって家臣としたという.この勘解由兵衛が谷相と名乗ったのが谷相氏の始まり.
谷相勘解由兵衛は谷相城を築城している.
家紋は丸に違い鷹の羽など.
