桓武平氏良文流中村氏族,神奈川県平塚市土屋を発祥の地とする一族.相模余綾[よろき]郡中村荘[神奈川県小田原市中村原・中井町中村]の荘司・中村宗平の子の宗遠[1128-1218]が相模国大住郡土屋を本拠地として土屋を称したことが起源.土屋宗遠は源頼朝挙兵時からの側近.
