五摂家の一つ.鷹司家は近衛家実の四男・兼平[1228-1294]を祖とする.
鷹司家は,江戸時代の1743年,閑院宮直仁親王[贈・慶光天皇]の第四王子・淳宮が鷹司輔平として継承したことで皇別摂家となった.
鷹司家からは鷹司松平家が分流している.
