桓武平氏良文流の上総氏の家紋.平常長の長男の佐賀常家が上総権介を承継したことが上総氏の起源.佐賀常家の跡は弟の常晴が承継.坂東八平氏の一つ.
上総広常は鎌倉幕府創建に功があったものの,大きな勢力を嫌った源頼朝の命令を受けた梶原景時によって誅殺された.
