宇多源氏佐々木氏族.滋賀県長浜市堀部町を発祥の地とする.六角氏の庶流である堀部四郎氏綱の子の時綱が堀越後守と称したことを起源とするという.
なお,同じく宇多源氏佐々木氏族で佐々木経実の四男の行実の流れを汲む堀氏もある.
代表的家紋は三つ盛亀甲に花菱.
