藤原北家秀郷流.栃木県小山市神鳥谷を発祥の地とする.藤原秀郷の子孫である太田行政の子・政光が下野大掾として下野国都賀郡小山庄を本拠地とし小山四郎を称したことが起源.秀郷流藤原氏の嫡流としての地位を誇った.家紋は右二つ巴など.
