藤原北家宇都宮氏族.宇都宮朝綱の養子である家政[高階氏業の子]が豊前国遠賀郡山鹿地頭職を得て山鹿,次いで麻生を称したことが起源.遠賀郡岡城を本拠とし,若松・戸畑・八幡・黒崎・遠賀郡に勢力を誇った.家紋は左三つ巴など.
