藤原北家伊周流氏族.駿河国駿河郡大森を発祥の地とする.大森頼春[-1469]の代に第3代鎌倉公方・足利満兼に仕えた.また,上杉禅秀の乱において土肥氏を駆逐し小田原城を築城し一帯を支配下に納めた.大森氏頼[-1494]以降は扇谷上杉家の重臣として活躍.家紋は左二つ巴など.
