藤原北家秀郷流蒲生氏族.蒲生家家臣.永禄十五年九月綿向神社奉加帳に北川新左衛門,北川佐渡守,北川久兵衛,北川千代菊,北川新右衛門,北川太郎右衛門の記載がある[近江蒲生郡志 巻3].北川平左衛門は,蒲生氏郷[1556-1595]に従って会津入りし,津川城主[新潟県東蒲原郡阿賀町]となっている.会津転封に従わなかった北川氏は帰農したという.家紋は鶴の丸など.
