越智宿禰流河野氏族.愛媛県東温市牛淵[伊予国浮穴郡牛淵村字牛頭守白石邑]を発祥の地とする.久寿3[1156]年,伊予国浮穴郡大領・白石三郎家員が氏社を造営し社領田を寄進したことが知られている.この白石家員は『東鑑』巻18にも記載がある.また,その弟は白石新大夫兼員.家紋は折敷に三文字など.
