藤原北家道兼流宇都宮氏族.宇都宮公綱の子孫という.栃木県宇都宮市新里町にある大堀城を本拠地とした.天正2[1574]年3月26日の「芳賀高継書状写」[小田部庄右衛門氏所蔵文書]に,半田藤右衛門が攻め寄せた鹿沼勢を討ち取った記述がある.
家紋は丸に木瓜など.
