藤原北家利仁流林氏族.石川県能美市辰口町[山上郷]を発祥の地とする.北加賀において勢力を誇った林六郎光明の子の光隆が山上を称したことが起源.なお,林六郎光明の墓所は白山市日御子町にある六郎塚とされている[越登賀三州志].家紋は片房付き三つ檜扇など.
