惟宗氏島津氏支族.
島津宗家9代当主・島津忠国の七男・島津忠弘が薩摩国喜入[鹿児島市喜入]を領したことが起源.喜入氏5代当主・喜入季久[1532-1588]の代から島津義久の命により喜入を称した.
喜入季久は島津義久の老中として,室町幕府将軍・足利義昭に拝謁したり,近衛前久を取次として大友氏との和睦交渉に奔走.
家紋は花轡など.
