宮司の職業に基づいた名字.遠江国引佐郡六座の一つで静岡県浜松市北区都田町に鎮座する須倍神社を発祥の地とする.須倍神社は仁和3[887]の創建.かつて,上社は上都田須部の上の山に,下社は下都田中津に鎮座していた.延喜2[902]年に上社下社の両社を内宮・外宮として現在地に遷座.例大祭では,川山・新木・横尾・吉影・谷上・一色・中津・中野・須部の各地区から山車が出る.
家紋は丸に違い鷹の羽など.
