桓武平氏貞盛流.平貞盛の曾孫貞衝の後裔とされる桑名恒平の子・光平が杉原氏を称したことが起源.光平の兄の宗平は大和氏・三重氏の祖となった.石清水八幡宮領の椙原保を本貫地としたことが杉原の名の由来.家紋は剣巴など.
