中原氏族.中原兼遠[-1181]の子の兼平[1152-1184]が今井村に拠って今井四郎を称したことが起源.中原兼遠の妻の千鶴御前は木曽義仲[1154-1184]の乳人.今井兼平は樋口兼光[-1184],根井行親[-1184],楯親忠[-1184]と並んで義仲四天王と称された.
長野県松本市大字今井が本貫地.
今井兼平の死後,子の今井兼之は木曽義仲の遺児・義基とともに群馬県渋川市北橘村箱田へと落ち延びたという.
