藤原北家真夏流日野氏族.日野俊光[1260-1326]の子の資明[1297-1353]を家祖とする.柳原資明の邸宅が柳原殿と呼ばれていたことが家名の由来.
柳原資綱[1419-1501]・量光・資定の3代は所領の因幡国法美郡に下向.柳原資定には嗣子なく,柳原家の分家である町資将[1518-1555]の子の淳光を養子とした.
柳原資廉[1644-1712]は霊元天皇と従兄弟の関係にあり武家伝奏を務めた.家紋は光琳鶴の丸など.
