清和源氏頼清流村上氏族.長野県長野市栗田[信濃国水内郡栗田]を発祥の地とする.村上為国の子の戸隠権別当寛覚が信濃国水内郡栗田郷を本拠地として栗田禅師と称したことが起源.鎌倉幕府の成立後,栗田寛覚は善光寺別当にも任じられ勢力を拡大した.家紋は丸に上の字など.
