藤原北家秀郷流小山氏族.栃木県小山市塚崎を発祥の地とする.小山氏第4代当主・小山長村[1217-1269]の子である宗光を祖とする.小山宗光は文永5[1268]年に父の長村より小山庄内の塚崎・田間を受け継いで塚崎に館を構え塚田と称した.小山市田間の宿尻館や元屋敷も塚田氏に関係すると考えられている.
塚田義智は,天文年間[1532?]に塚田館から小山高朝の居城である祇園城内の塚田廓に移っている.天正4[1576]年頃に,塚田伊豆守は祇園城から寒川城に移る.その後,天正18[1590]年に祇園城は小山秀綱の弟・結城晴朝によって攻められ落城.塚田氏は寒川,迫間田などに帰農したという.
家紋は左二つ巴など.
