桓武平氏維将流北条氏族.愛知県名古屋市中村区横井[横江村]を発祥の地とする.北条高時の遺児・北条時行の孫の北条時任が尾張国愛知郡横江村に来住したことが起源.北条時任の子・北条時利が横井を称した.北条時利の子の横井時永が赤目城を築城している.
