桓武平氏良茂流.愛知県知多郡南知多町大字内海[尾張国知多郡野間庄,尾張国知多郡長田庄]を発祥の地とする.道長四天王の1人である平致頼[-1011]の代に尾張国野間へと進出.
平治の乱[1159]に敗れた主君である源義朝[1123-1160]を討ち取った長田忠致[-1190]が知られる.
