村上源氏季房流赤松氏族.兵庫県佐用郡佐用町字福原を発祥の地とする.上月盛忠の子の景行が福原を称したことが起源.赤松氏36人衆の一つ.佐用[福原]城に拠った.
天正5[1577]年,佐用城は羽柴秀吉配下の黒田孝高・竹中重治に攻められ,福原則尚は円福寺にて自刃し落城.
家紋は左三つ巴など.
