ジョルジョ・ヴァザーリ[Giorgio Vasari,1511/7/30-1574/6/27]が『画家・彫刻家・建築家列伝』[Le Vite delle più eccellenti pittori,scultori,e architettori;Lives of the Most Excellent Painters,Sculptors,and Architects]において,レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが「フランチェスコ・デル・ジョコンドから妻モナ・リザの肖像画制作の依頼を受けた」と記述していることから,この作品がモナリザと呼ばれている.
